Welcome, newbie! You must be new to Instagram if you’re wondering how to post on Instagram.
You’re in luck, because like everything on this app, it’s easy and simple to use! Instagram is a very user-friendly app. You’ll have lots of posts and followers in no time.
For now, we’ll focus on the basic: how to post on Instagram.
Trusting that you’ve created an Instagram account and logged in, it’s time to post your first photo!
You don’t even need to have a photo ready to post on Instagram. If you do have a photo ready, that’s great, too. We’ll discuss both how to post a photo you’ve already taken and a brand new photo.
First, you’ll need to log in to Instagram, of course. When you log in, you’ll see all your follower’s photos and stories appear in your feed. Let this inspire you if you have no idea what to post first!
A good idea for a first post is a picture of you. It’s a great opportunity to introduce yourself or say hi to family and friends who might follow you.
Click The Upload Button
Next, you need to click the upload button. It’s a tiny blue box with a plus sign at the bottom middle of your home screen.

Choose A Photo To Post On Instagram
If you have a photo ready, you can choose it from this screen. Simply scroll through your photos to find one to post.

Or maybe you’re more organized and have your photos in certain albums on your phone. In that case, click “All Photos” at the top of your screen. Choose the album you want and scroll through until you find the photo that you want to post.
Or Take A Photo To Post
If you don’t have any prepared to post, that’s okay! You can always take photos from the Instagram app.
Click “Photo” or “Video” at the bottom of the screen to snap a photo on the spot.

You can, of course, use the selfie cam too if you’d like!
Edit Your Instagram Photo
Now that you’ve either taken or chosen a photo to post on Instagram, it’s time to edit the photo.
If you don’t want to edit the photo, or have used an external app to do this, then skip this step by clicking “Next”.
However, the Instagram photo editor is really good so you can definitely utilize it if you’re just getting started!
There are dozens of Instagram filters to choose from. You can adjust the strength by clicking on the filter and using the sliding tool to increase or decrease the strength.
Next, click “Edit” to do more specific edits on the photo. From here you can adjust brightness, contrast, structure and much more to make sure you’re uploading the best quality and eye-catching photo possible!
Caption It
Once you’re done editing the photo, click “Next”. You’ll be taken to a page where you can write your caption. Your Instagram caption is arguably as important as your photo. It’s what will show your personality, opinions, thoughts, and process behind your photos so make sure your caption is awesome!
The first two lines of the caption matter the most as it’s what will show up on your follower’s timeline when they are scrolling through Instagram.
Once you’ve written your caption, you can tag people, add a location and even share to Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr.

In fact, if you have more than one Instagram account, now is your chance to post it across all of them, or even a different one from the account you’re currently using. This is definitely a great feature!
Now – post the photo to your Instagram profile! Click “Share” and the photo will quickly upload to be shared with your followers. If it does well enough, it might even be shared on the explore page where you will attract new followers.
How To Post On Instagram Story
Now that you’ve mastered the steps to posting Instagram photos, it’s time to learn how to post on Instagram stories!
Instagram stories are short photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. They’re ideal for behind the scenes, going into more details on a day out or new product, showing your day to day life, or to talk about things you might never post about on your main feed.
Most successful Instagrammers will use their Instagram stories every day, posting between 4 and 10 stories per day. It’s great to stay active on Instagram stories but you also don’t want to flood your follower’s feeds with lots of updates.
Log Onto Instagram
Like the last part, you need to log onto Instagram first. This time, though, don’t leave your home screen where you see everyone’s posts and stories.
Swipe Right
To access your Instagram story, you need to swipe right from the home screen.

This brings up your camera to snap your Instagram photos.
Choose Or Take Photo To Post On Instagram
You can take a new photo for your Instagram story by pointing and shooting, just like a normal camera.
However, you can also choose from your camera roll and albums by swiping up.
You can choose any photos in your library, even ones from more than 24 hours ago.
If you are taking a photo, check out all the different options: type, music, live, normal, boomerang, superzoom, focus, rewind, and hands free.
You even have the option of loads of face filters to put on while taking a photo or video!
Add Text And Stickers
Once you’ve taken or chosen a photo to post, you can add stickers, links, text, or drawings. Just browse through the options at the top of the screen and choose the options that will suit your select photo.

Post Your Story
When you have the perfect story to post on Instagram, it’s time for the next step!
Click “Your Story” in the bottom left. This goes to your Instagram story where all of your followers can see it.
You can also choose “Close Friends” which will send it to the select few people you have added as close friends on Instagram.
However, you can also send it to specific groups or people by clicking “Send to”.
You can search for a user or group to send it to you instead of posting to your story.
This is great for photos or videos you want to keep more private and don’t need the entire world knowing!
If you do want more privacy, you can always make your Instagram account private. That means that people need to request to follow you before they can see any of your photos or stories. You’ll have the chance to approve or reject them when they request to follow you. If you reject them, they can’t access your content – it remains completely private!
