If you want to upload multiple images at once, creating an Instagram carousel is the way forward! Before, you used to upload multiple photos separately.
Everyone knows that’s not Instagram protocol! With the algorithm favoring less frequent posts, it’s great that we now have Instagram carousels to help us out with multiple photo posts.
What Is An Instagram Carousel?
An Instagram carousel is one Instagram post in which you post up to 10 photos. You can swipe through them when they come up on your feed.
When you like an Instagram carousel, you’re liking all the photos, not just the one you stop at.
You can post anywhere between 2 and 10 photos in an Instagram carousel but they must be all the same size.
If you choose a landscape photo for the first one, all the photos will automatically be cropped to the same size.
So, it’s a good idea to choose all the same ratio of photos for one carousel, otherwise, it might get cropped oddly!
Essentially, you’re getting even more content into a smaller space! If you have 5 products you want to promote, for example, but you only post once a day, then Instagram carousels are a great tool to utilize on Instagram.
Instagram carousels actually perform really well on Instagram, too. If you posted 10 photos in a row on Instagram, the algorithm wouldn’t favor it. But when you post a carousel, people will stop and take more interest in your post and therefore, it might actually gather more likes!
How To Post An Instagram Carousel
Like everything on Instagram, posting an Instagram carousel is super easy.
- Open Instagram and log in.
- Click the square plus sign at the bottom middle to upload a photo.
- Choose the photo you want to upload as first in the carousel.
- Next, click the multiple square icon on the right-hand side of the image.
- Scroll through your photos to choose the next few photos you want to upload.
- Upload as normal!
You can even put a different filter on every single one by clicking the individual edit button on each photo. It’s great for creativity!
Unfortunately, once it’s edited you can’t go back and change the filters though. So choose wisely!
Creative Ways To Use Instagram Carousels
You might be wondering, “What on earth am I going to use Instagram carousels for?”. That’s a good question! We’ll give you 7 ways you can utilize carousels on your feed, no matter what kind of content you post.
Launch New Products
If you’re a business, then Instagram carousels should already be your best friend. If not, here’s why.
You can definitely use carousels for launching new products! Perhaps you have a new item launching and you want to show it being used in a few different ways, or on a few different models.
Perhaps you have a whole range launching with a few different products involved. You can launch them all in one awesome Instagram post by using a carousel.
In this post, @theconsistencyproject launches its new collection of summer anklets by making a carousel of four gorgeous posts. This gets customers more engaged because all the reveals are in one simple easy place to access: an Instagram carousel!
Because you can only post 60-second videos in an Instagram post, people love using Instagram carousels to lengthen their videos! Now, they can technically post a 10-minute video by using the carousels.
@parisraymusic uses her Instagram carousels to complete a cover of her favorite songs! This is a great idea because 60 seconds sometimes isn’t enough for even a verse or chorus.
You can also use Instagram carousels for videos of workout routines, editing processes, sports and much more!
Before And After On Instagram Carousels
Everyone – and we mean everyone – loves before and after pictures! When you post them in your stories, watch your impressions go up!
Try posting them in a carousel, too. People will absolutely love seeing the difference in photos!
If you’re a photographer like @amandawootonphotography, try sharing your before and after photos to showcase your editing talent as well as your photography skills.
Showcasing before and after photos is also ideal if you’re trying to sell a Lightroom preset. This way you can show your followers the stunning difference your unique filters can make on their own photos!
Simply Share More
Perhaps you went to a festival this weekend and took one really rocking photo that’s perfect for Instagram! It’s going to do really well, but you also want to share some of your crazy videos from seeing your favorite artists live.
However, you know those posts won’t perform great. On their own, that is! Now, with Instagram carousels, you can still post those fun memories as part of your main event image.
You’re not oversharing or spamming your follower’s feed, but you still get the share the same posts you originally wanted to. Best of both worlds.
Instagram carousels are perfect for increasing engagement because you can easily ask followers questions by using them.
@shethespy is great with her carousels! She compares side by side photos of two completely different outfits and gets her followers to vote on their favorite one.
This increases engagement and allows her followers to be part of her post in a more intimate way! Do this every few weeks, or days if you can, to build a great relationship with your followers.
Go Into Detail
It helps to go into the finer details whether you are a brand, influencer, or neither! Using Instagram carousels is the best tool to do that.
For example, @hellofresh uses Instagram carousels to go into more detail about different recipes. Here they showcase the eye-catching green bottle. Their next post shows exactly what’s in it, in a creative way!
They give enough away so that followers will be able to make the sauce themselves, too!
If you’re a “foodstagrammer”, use Instagram carousels to make your feed look aesthetic, but use the carousel tool to go into more “behind the scenes” stuff for each post. That keeps your feed tidy but still full of all the good stuff!
Even if you’re not a brand or “foodstagrammer”, you can still use Instagram carousels to go into more detail. Perhaps you want to showcase a certain object. Take your normal style of photo but then get a close up of the object for the next photos in your carousel!
Like @esti.em did with this photo, they take their beautiful decor photo, but then use the carousel to examine the glass bottle much closer in detail. The second photo on its own wouldn’t be so eye-catching but paired with the first photo, it does really well on Instagram.
Behind The Scenes
Speaking of behind the scenes, there’s no better tool to show your followers your photo taking progress than through Instagram carousels.
You can use the multiple photo tool to upload a video of you getting the perfect shot for your Instagram feed! It doesn’t spam your feed and it can definitely go along with your original post.
In this post, @bethsbookshelf shows the video of her before the photo was snapped. She really was writing while the photo was being taken! The behind the scenes clips show the process that goes into a photo, whether it’s authentic or staged.
Now that you know all there is to know about Instagram carousels, it’s time to go and create your own. Maybe you’ll even find a new reason to use them!
